Are Fathers the most difficult people to buy gifts for? I think so. I can’t tell you the number of gifts I got for my father that were never even taken out of the box! Let’s take the difficulty out of Fathers Day Gift Ideas this year by finding a unique gift for Dad that he really wants.

Let’s look at Dad though the eyes of Gary Chapman’s 5 Love Languages as we did for Mothers Day. Most guys don’t wear their hearts on their sleeves but I bet you can still determine what Fathers Day Gift would make him feel the most appreciated.
- Words of Affirmation Gifts. This father needs to hear that you love him.
- Write a list of the top 5 reasons you appreciate your Dad and have it framed or put on a mug or on a t-shirt that you give him.
- Create an online photo album or slideshow for Dad of your favorite moments together. Every few slides include one that is a sentence or two describing a favorite memory. (Keynote or PowerPoint would be good tools for creating this gift)
- A nice watch, ipod or electronics case with a special engraved message of appreciation.
- Quality Time Gifts. The best Fathers Day Gift for this man would be to spend time with you. That is what will make him the happiest.
- Join your Dad doing his favorite activity (even if it isn’t yours). For e.g. Golfing, Bird-watching, Camping, Car, Boat , or RV Show, or maybe an Old Car Swap Meets (a tip of the hat to my father).
- Plan a special day for just you and your father to spend time.
- Take a special trip with your Dad. It could be a weekend away or a long trip. My Mother and Grandmother took a trip to Ireland together about 20 years ago and had a fabulous time. They both loved the time together and visiting an area where some of our ancestors emigrated from.
- Receiving Gifts. This Dad would love a thoughtful, unique gift from you.
- Create a collage photo of your favorite moments to give to him.
- Make your Dad a duct-tape wallet! My stepson recently made these for a school project and I know a lot of guys who would LOVE one. This is a great gift that kids can help make.
- Make a list of your fathers favorite activities. What does he love to do? Now brainstorm what items he could use to make that activity more fun or easier to do. If he loves working with wood maybe there is a tool he needs or maybe a brand of his initials that he could add to his projects. Does he love having a beautiful lawn? You could get him a special tool to make his lawn even more beautiful. Maybe your father loves sporting events and you could get him tickets to an event that he would like to go do but isn’t expecting to be able to.
- Acts of Service Gifts. A great gift for this Dad is doing things for him.
- Make your Father his favorite meal.
- Give your Dad a Cookie of the Month gift certificate and you can deliver him some home-made cookies. A different kind every month for 3 months to a year, whatever time frame you prefer.
- Polish his shoes for him.
- Do all the yard work for him for 1 month.
- Physical Touch Gifts. This Dad wants wants you to shower him with physical affection.
- Make it a point to give your Dad more hugs. Maybe Fathers Day becomes National Hug Day in your house and every time you see you Dad he gets a hug.
- Give your Dad a special bell. When Dad rings his bell all the kids come and give him a hug and kiss, Mom should play too!
If you haven’t recognized which type your father is you could ask your father to complete the quiz. If you don’t want your Dad to have an idea what you are up to try completing it for him. Of course there is a lot more room for error in that but the questions may help you recognize what he values.
