Our family recently had a weekend vacation at YMCS of the Rockies, Estes Park Center. We took advantage of a couple Groupons I bought for lodging for the weekend. WIth this deal we were able to get the rooms for about half price.
YMCA of the Rockies is a large complex with cabins, lodges, meeting rooms, restaurants and lots of activities. The majority of the activities are best enjoyed in good weather. It was about 35 and very windy when we were there. The boys, 11 and 13, were not excited. It was a good amount of walking around the complex to get from place to place (we made it clear we were not driving, it wasn’t that big!)
We endeavored to enjoy the experience though. My husband took the youngest to the indoor pool while the older boy and I checked out the library. We met up back at the room for lunch (I brought sandwich fixings). After lunch we joined a scheduled activity, Family Adventure. We were the only family signed up. The two facilitators took us to a cove sheltered by trees. On the way we saw a few elk near some cabins! Once in the cove the facilitators led us through a number of family activities that caused us to work together to complete a task. We all had a lot of fun, kids included and the cold weather was quickly forgotten.
Next we went to the indoor roller skating rink. DH has fond memories of skating as a youngster, as do I. The boys haven’t had much experience will roller skating so we spent lots of time helping them learn to skate. The youngest made quite a bit of progress. After about 45 min we decided we were done skating for the day, it was perfect timing as some teenagers came in right after us.
Despite the cool weather a good time was had by all. Having the family work together to achieve a goal was a very good experience for all of us. I hope to try some of those same games in a park near our house.
